Making Our Own Music
Piano Learning Tips
Q: What's the #1 thing that keeps pianists from improvising?
A: Fear of wrong notes.
And yet, it's the wrong notes that give improvisations character. A hundred times it's been said that music is either personal or it's dull. This is especially true for improvisation.
In creating a personal sound and style, wrong notes have a special place. The mistakes are ours, but we don't consciously choose them. Therefore, our mistakes are both personal and profoundly creative.
Some mistakes sound great instantly, some that don't are saved by satisfying resolutions, and many are forgotten. Out of it all comes a personal music that's fascinating in its various moods and is never dull.
Where there are no flubs, there can be no fear. We look forward to the variations in our music. As long as we keep the beat going, we're good.
